Boost Production for Smallholder Farmers:

The majority of Bhutanese farmers run small-scale subsistence farms with low productivity and limited processing capability, which cannot compete with India's cheap and plentiful imports. Food and nutrition insecurity was aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Imports were impeded as borders were closed and lockdowns were implemented, while local smallholder farmers battled to maintain production. The government responded by launching the Economic Contingency Plan, which provided farmers with hybrid vegetable seeds, agricultural equipment, and practical training with the help of the World Food Programme.

Hybrid seeds increased farmers' yields, while specialized tools and equipment like drip irrigation systems, greenhouses, water-harvesting ponds, and mulching sheets lowered physical labor needs and alleviated water shortages.

Remove Gender Barriers:

In Bhutan, agriculture employs 86 % of rural women. In the aftermath of COVID-19, WFP has backed the government's Economic Contingency Plan to help boost agriculture production, food security, and resilience. The scheme, which was funded by the World Food Programme, also assisted women farmers in overcoming gender-based barriers to agricultural output. This was accomplished through providing leadership, business management, and bookkeeping training to women farmer organizations, as well as technical training in areas like production, post-harvest, and marketing. This gender-sensitive approach is critical, as women are disproportionately affected by food system challenges due to limited access to assets and exclusion from decision-making processes.

Infrastructural challenges in Bhutan Country:

Natural disasters and climate-related concerns affect Bhutan. Bhutan has risen to the status of a lower-middle-income country. The government has been able to cut the number of extremely poor people by two-thirds in the last decade. Bhutan's infrastructure has been damaged by natural catastrophes. The Government of Bhutan has asked for financial and technical help from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to strengthen urban infrastructure and services in Bhutan's two main cities, Thimphu and Phuentsholing, particularly in the recently expanded sections of both cities. The government also requested assistance in developing Dagana, one of the few regional centers that had not previously received aid.
